> What's the dumbest thing you ever did in a race?

Though I'm sure I've done more embarrassing stuff, this was one of the stupidest things I did: Cat 1/2 road race near Merced on a course that is basically the same as the McLane Pacific RR back in around '91 or '92. Somewhere around 90-100 miles long. I get into a fairly early break away with a few guys. One of them, Chuck Hutcheson is really strong and we have to work to keep him from breaking everybody's legs. Metcalfe, June 24, 2001 racing in Burlingame, Calif. Anyway, towards the end it's just he and I, then we get caught by a chase group on the last lap. Finally, with about three miles to go somehow we find ourselves off the front again. Coming in with about 500 meters to go on a slightly uphill stretch, Chuck tells me to take it and the win is mine. Being a bit wary, I take the front, but hold some back in case he's pulling my leg. Then Chuck starts yelling and I look back to see my team mate Mike Sayers charging up from behind all alone. I hit the gas for all I'm worth, but Mike blows by me and wins fairly easily.

That race was mine. Chuck had given it to me fair and square. No games. It would have been fairly epic considering how long we were out there. But like a dumbshit I out smarted myself and threw it away. Nothing big was on the line that day, but I threw away a perfectly good victory and it still pisses me off. :)

So remember, use your brain... But not too much! - Kevin Metcalfe, 1/20/2000.

"...As I leave I contemplate the experience. I've been racing for a long time, but I didn't start riding the track until I was 30. I was the Cat 4 champion at the 1991 Georgia State Games riding a mountain bike frame that I had adapted for the track and the bug had bitten. Our daughter was born while my wife was doing a tenure chase so I sort of coughed up a couple of years there. The result is that I don't have a lot of experience riding at this level and I feel like I'm still developing as a rider. I feel smarter and faster. One of my teammates in the Team Pursuit is not far out of high school, no doubt he feels smarter and faster also. It's probably a lot more significant to him. The sky has finally cleared which means we'll finally get some sun tomorrow. There is a beautiful full moon to watch as I drive home." - Bob Schwartz, 6/16/00

From June 23, 2001, Pescadero Road Race: "That's funny as hell [roadrash picture]. Who snapped that?

"For some background, let me state that braking with carbon fiber rims is DRASTICALLY different than with aluminum rims. I will not be riding CF rims without different brake pads in the future -- I have been down that descent more than 300 times and I really was having a tough time on Saturday.

"Holy cow, a 40 mph get-off is very uncomfortable. Luckily, I didn't break anything but I lost even more skin than you can *see* there."

The most irritating thing about the whole incident is that I don't even remember it. I remember about 3 minutes before and then blank until the paramedics start talking to me."
